Your fight is to labour into rest.

What an oxymoron.

Recently I realised that the above three words are very, very important. And this is very serious.

Peace of mind. Labour into rest.

Your only fight is to remain at rest.

  1. It is not only in death that we can rest in peace. Check out the 12 tidal hexagrams of I Ching (十二消息卦), especially 坤卦 through 复卦, 临卦 to 泰卦. The fight that’s happening is happening within us. For we are actually struggling and fighting against ourselves. Cease, and we shall rest in the source (坤). From the source, life thus returns (复). With life, we then deliver (临) according to the constant change to arrive at peace (泰).

    This is from <>: 致虚极,守静笃,万物并作,吾以观复。夫物芸芸,各归其根。归根曰静,静曰复命。复命曰常,知常曰明,不知常,妄作,凶。

    This is from 《大学》: 知止而后有定,定而后能静,静而后能安,安而后能虑,虑而后能得

Most people only know 安静. 《大学》 teaches us 静安 – a peace that is independent of external conditions.

Have fun in your journey into Chinese philosophy!

    • Hello!🙂

By “labouring into rest”, I mean “working to maintain a peace of mind” in this life🙂

      Yeah I’d been studying 易经…

      • Yup, saw quite a few 易经 posts here. It really is a profound book. It’s great that you’re sharing bits of it in your blog.

I think I get what you mean by ‘labouring into rest’, just not sure about the ‘fight’ part, because most of the time we are only fighting ourselves – mind battling mind. Maybe you like to check out this micro-story I wrote? It might illustrate what I’m trying to say clearer.

      • I agree with what you wrote!🙂 it’s exactly what I’d meant.

By “fight” I mean always make it a point to put “peace of mind” as first priority.

  2. Oh, I see. Yup, seems like as we grow older, we value peace of mind more. Whereas youth is the season of the excited heart, of intense pleasure and heartache. Well, the flower blooms and fruits and ripens, everything in its own time and place.

May all beings be safe and at ease!
